Volvo Electrical Car Battery charger – Volvo Car Team is a companion in a sophisticated research project investigating the opportunities of inductive billing for electrical vehicles – and the outcomes show that this technology of moving power through an electro-magnetic area has a promising future.
“Inductive billing has great potential. Cordless technology is a practical and efficient way to conveniently move power. The study also suggests that it’s safe,” said Lennart Stegland, Volvo Car Group’s vice head of state for electrical own systems, including: “There’s no uniform standard for inductive billing yet. We are proceeding our research and assessing the expediency of the technology in our crossbreed and electrical car jobs.”

Inductive charging uses an electromagnetic field instead of a wire to transfer energy between two objects. The induction coil creates an alternating electromagnetic field from the charging base station. A second induction coil in the portable device picks up energy from the electromagnetic field and converts it back into electrical energy that charges the battery. This technology is common in electrical household appliances such as electric toothbrushes, but is not yet commercially available for charging electric cars.

“With inductive charging, you place the car over a charging device and charging starts automatically. We believe this is one of the factors that can increase customer acceptance of electric vehicles,” says Lennart Stegland.
The completed research project, which also includes inductive car and bus charging, was initiated by Flanders’ Drive, the vehicle industry information center for the Flanders region in Belgium. It was home to a consortium of companies including Volvo Car Group, Bombardier Transportation and coachbuilder Van Hool. The project was partly funded by the Flemish government. Volvo Cars provided the car for the inductive charging project: Volvo C30 Electric with 89 kW (120 hp).
“Tests have proven that the Volvo C30 Electric can be fully charged without a power cable in the app. 2.5 hours. At the same time, we also carried out research on slow and regular charging with Inverto, which was also a partner in the project,” says Lennart Stegland.
Volvo Cars’ ambitious electrification strategy also led to the successful launch of the fast-selling Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, which entered series production in 2012.

When you arrive at the charging station, select the appropriate charger and tap the green “Start Charging” button. The app communicates with the ChargePoint network to activate the selected charger and unlock the connector. The driver can then get out of the car, unplug the charger and plug it in. There is no need to enter a payment method, as payment information is pre-stored in the driver’s ChargePoint account at setup.
Once the vehicle has been delivered, owners will receive an email from Volvo Car USA that guides them through the activation process.
Electrify America is focused on enabling electric vehicles to travel interstate. Their stations are ideal for charging on long journeys. Drivers are more likely to see them at a large dealership near the highway than around town.
Most Electrify America stations use a 150 kWh DC fast charger. This is the most power an electric Volvo can handle. When connected to a 150 kWh station, the XC40 Recharge charges from 20% to 90% in around 40 minutes.
Volvo Xc40 Recharge First Drive: The Good, The Bad And The Efficiency
The XC40 and C40 Recharge have a 78 kWh battery. Therefore, 250 kWh of energy is equivalent to charging the battery from 10% to 80% approximately 4.5 times. Charging your car is a key part of electrified car ownership. Find out how a Volvo Recharge car can fit into your lifestyle.
Sometimes silent is the strongest way to go, with no tailpipe emissions and less noise at all speeds. Powered by a high voltage battery and twin electric motors, the pure electric XC40 Recharge is a clear step forward on the road ahead.
Less gas, more purpose. In our Recharge plug-in hybrid, the electric motor and internal combustion engine combine to select pure electric mode, performance mode and hybrid mode, providing full driving control and lower exhaust emissions.
Where can I charge? The availability of charging plays a big part in the everyday experience of owning an electric car.

If you park in a garage or driveway at home, or in a place where charging is constantly available at work, you can easily integrate charging into your daily routine. Our pure electric cars and plug-in hybrids are both great options.
With occasional dedicated charging access, plug-in hybrid cars – which run on fuel when you can’t charge – can offer more flexibility. An electric-only car can also be a great fit, depending on your driving pattern.
If you rely on short-term public charging – like at the gym or shopping center – a plug-in hybrid can be a great choice. Alternatively, a mild hybrid – which captures braking energy but doesn’t need to be connected – is a great fit.
How often should I charge? Charging frequency depends on how far you usually travel in a day and the range of the car.*
Volvo Cars Goes For Plugsurfing As Charging Partner
With a pure electric motor, you should have enough range for daily trips and charge as often as needed during the week. With a plug-in hybrid, you can drive in all directions in electric mode, but you may need to charge after each trip to reduce fuel consumption.
With a pure electric motor, you should have enough range for daily trips, but you may need to charge at each end point. For a plug-in hybrid, it will use a combination of electricity and fuel.
The all-electric device offers enough range for long commutes or weekend getaways, although you’ll need to coordinate charging options. The plug-in hybrid will use a combination of electricity and fuel.
* The range experienced by the customer depends on driving style, road and traffic conditions, environmental influences, vehicle condition and fitted accessories.

* Charging time also depends on factors such as outside temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition.
To get the most out of your pure electric car battery, we recommend charging the battery to 90 percent AC during normal daily driving, and ideally not letting the charge drop below 20 percent. The car offers plenty of choice for a daily commute and you should pick it up as often as needed during the week.
The standard charging cable supplied with the vehicle can be connected directly to your pure electric car and then to your home
